The Velvet Chair – Jennifer

As soon as Vincent saw the tears he spun around in front of me, shielding me from the few milling guests that were in the foyer. He drew in a long breath and put his hands gently on my shoulders. He pursed his mouth in thought for a second before saying, “Tell me one thing, Mrs Matthews. Do you want to stay married to Mark?”

“Yes,” I whispered, because it was the only answer I could give. There was no other choice left to me.

Vincent frowned at me, his mouth flattening as he considered my words. He gave me a puzzled look and then shook his head, running his hand through the soft waves of his dark brown hair.

“I have no idea what you are playing at, Jennifer, but you can’t cross swords with Mark and not end up paying the ultimate price. He’s out for blood. You’re a fool for taking him on.” His hands shook me gently, as if trying to shake some sense into me. He chewed his lip for a moment, as if wondering whether to continue, but when he did, he said, “If you want to stay married to Mark, don’t give him tears. He doesn’t respect them. You’ll need to fight fire with fire, and the war will need to be waged up here,” he tapped at my temple to emphasise his point. “Tears will give him exactly what he wants.” His words were slow and enunciated carefully, as if to make sure I heard each and every one of them. Pulling a starched white hankerchief out of his pocket, he dabbed softly at the corners of my eyes.

“Why are you telling me this?” I sniffed. “Aren’t you supposed to be best friends with the enemy?”

Vincent flicked his thumb slowly across my chin and smiled. “Just because I’m friends with the enemy, doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree with what he’s doing.” His thumb slowly ran across my bottom lip and I shuddered. He was an attractive man, and though I wasn’t personally attracted to him, my body was in such a state of frenzy it didn’t know what it was doing.

“Would you help get me away from here?” The words rushed from lips without thought, and I regretted them almost instantly as he sighed and shook his head.

“What you fail to understand, is that people who do things like that to Mark suffer horrific consequences.” His finger became firmer on my lip and pushed it down upon my teeth so I hissed out a breath. “I believe you’re just beginning to realize that.”

  1. I’m loving all the excerpts you’re sharing. So, when is this book going to be released to public? she asked, itching to get her fingers on it.
